Tree pruning up to 12' high
I specialize in tree care and light pruning for well-maintained trees. While I am conservative in my approach to pruning (pruning wounds the tree), good pruning at the right time is often needed in an urban environment where safety and protection for people and property are a high priority. I would be glad to help you care for your trees, to give them thier best life while meeting your aesthetic and safety goals for your home.
Tree planting
I provide support with tree selection (right tree, right place) and full implementation of tree planting, including permitting if needed. Planting a right of way (street) tree requires a permit from the city of Seattle, but private property plantings generally do not require a permit. I can help with both.
Included in this service is selection, site preparation, delivery of tree, soil augmentation to the dripline of the tree, and an intial thorough watering. Ongoing watering by the homeowner is required and can be supplemented with water bags or other strategies.
If you have a larger lot and are interested in planting an urban mini-forest, contact me for more information.
Healthy soils
I provide a simple and proven solution for soil enhancement that is 100% organic and naturally regenerates healthy living humus. This solution does not require labor costs to remove existing grass or weeds and will significantly enhance the soil microbiome, worm colonies, the micorrhyzal network, moisture retention, reduce watering needs, and if properly implemented, will improve the overall the health of your trees and shrubs while enhancing their inherent ability to resist diseases.
This is something you can do yourself if you want to save money. I will happily share my knowledge and resources with you in a one hour site consultation to ensure that the implementation is successful.
Why invest in tree planting and pruning?
Home value Healthy and vibrant urban trees will improve the appearance of your home and increase home value, according to this study featured on Seattle's City Trees website.
Cost savings Properly placed and pruned trees can also significantly lower your heating and cooling costs by 10-30%, recovering some or all of the cost of planting and pruning. Removing branches from locations immediately over gutters and rooflines can help reduce moss and gutter cleaning costs.
Harm prevention and reduced liability Home safety and reducing potential liability and loss are another serious consideration for homeowners with trees over your home, outbuildings, sidewalks, and roadways. Limbs touching buildings can also be a pathway for harmful insects and home damage.
Aesthetic beauty Pruning early in a tree's life can improve the overall form of the tree as it grows and can prevent larger pruning scars from becoming necessary later, as the tree matures. Larger wounds are unsightly and also are harder for the tree to heal, and should be minimized by pruning early.
Physical and Mental Health There is a growing body of research showing the positive physical and mental health benefits of human contact with healthy trees and forests.
Adapting to the warming climate Planting trees is something tangible that you can do now to stave off the worst impacts of climate change. Trees need time to get established, so planting now will give them the best chance of growing to maturity before the heat becomes a more serious health risk. Shaded areas under trees can be 10 degrees or more cooler than areas in full sun with no trees. Planting and restoring vitality to trees can accelerate our adaptive response to climate change, one tree at a time.
Good stewardship for the community Vitality for humans and the local ecosystem are improved by healthy trees in a variety of ways both tangible and intangible: cleaner air and groundwater, protection from increasing summer heat, aquifer restoration, stream and lake restoration, lower temperatures, increased rainfall, improved soils, stability on slopes, improved habitat, and the list goes on.
Food production If you own fruit or nut trees, these trees can be pruned and the soil nourished to increase fruit yield and disease resistance.
Site visit and first hour is $180, then $60/hour. I personally provide all labor and consulting. For tree planting, I will provide pricing on a case by case basis, as tree pricing can vary widely. Check out this resource for street trees.
After a 30 year career in woodworking, urban tree salvage, sustainable furniture design, I have oriented my "third act" towards the care and planting of living trees. I have been working as a professional arborist since February 2024, but have a lifetime of practice in my own garden and have helped many friends maintain their trees. I have had great instruction from Plant Amnesty, Edmonds College Horticulture department, and OSU permaculture online learning. Over time, I have come to know trees as truly miraculous living beings. I love learning about trees and continue to learn more every day.
